This extensive research project investigates the collaboration required between municipal and provincial departments; private developers, residents and affected parties to achieve integrated planning in the Gauteng City-Region (GCR). In particular it looks at the intricacies of spatial visions,
the alignments and misalignments
of municipal plans, the strategies of investors and the needs of residents.
A major component of the research is a report that will review a number of built and unbuilt developments in the GCR, using ethnographic approaches to understand the complex terrain in which private investors and the public sector work.
The map shown here was recently released by the GCRO. It demonstrates significant misalignments between the planning of ‘mega human settlements’ by the provincial Human Settlements Department, and transport infrastructure planning by the provincial Department of Roads and Transport.
